AN extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) produced in the heart of the Klein Karoo at De Rustica Olive Estate was recently named the sixth healthiest EVOO in the world, and number one in South Africa, at the prestigious 2022 Evooleum Guide EVOO Awards!
While the Italian and Spanish EVOOs dominated the top 10 as some of the healthiest oils in the world, the Klein Karoo’s own master olive oil makers would not be outdone. “We are proud to announce another major international achievement! The De Rustica Coratina Estate Collection has just achieved the 6th position and received the Top Ten Evooleum Reward,” De Rustica announced on Facebook.
This De Rustica EVOO was the only one from outside the Mediterranean Basin amongst the top 10 in the world!
Health benefits of EVOO
According to The Olive Wellness Institute the health benefits of EVOO are:
• EVOO is a rich source of antioxidants and mono unsaturated fats, both of which are closely associated with cardiovascular health, including a significantly lower risk of heart disease and strokes;
• EVOO may help improve insulin sensitivity, which can help protect against type 2 diabetes or tmanage pre-existing diabetes;
• Due to the number of active compounds, namely oxidative stability, superior antioxidant contents, and the ratio of monounsaturated fats – as well as its diverse flavour profile, EVOO is easily the best choice for cooking.
Cooking with this oil can help retain – and in some instances increase – the number of nutrients and antioxidants in the cooked food that would otherwise be lost or damaged;
• Emerging research links polyphenols and olive oil consumption to a reduced risk of bone density loss in old age;
• EVOO could potentially protect against some types of cancers; and
• Recent research suggests that a diet rich in EVOO may inhibit the compounds responsible for Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.
