The Garden Route Badgers face a crucial weekend as they chase a place in the final of the Cricket South Africa Division 2 four-day competition, knowing that only an outright victory will keep their title hopes alive.
The Badgers host Eastern Storm in their final pool match, with the four-day encounter getting under way on Thursday. After a flawless start to the competition, where they claimed convincing victories in their first three fixtures, the Badgers’ campaign stalled following heavy away defeats to the Northern Cape Heat and the Knights.
With one round remaining, the Knights top the log on 103,74 points after five matches, followed by Eastern Storm on 90,18 points. The Badgers are third with 86,90 points, leaving them with little margin for error.
An outright win is essential if they are to overtake Eastern Storm and secure a place in the final. Finishing top of the table appears unlikely, as the Knights are set to face the Mpumalanga Rhinos in White River.
The competition’s points system places further emphasis on first-innings performance. Batting bonus points are awarded at the 100-over mark, with one point for reaching 150 runs and an additional 0,02 points per run thereafter.
Bowling points are earned for taking wickets within the same period, with one point for three wickets, two for five, three for seven and four for nine. An outright victory is worth 15 points, while a draw yields six.
Eastern Storm boast a formidable line-up, and the Badgers will need to be disciplined and consistent across all four days. Encouragingly for the hosts, the squad is close to full strength, with only Jade Richter sidelined due to an ankle injury.
