Kingdom News: When you lose your joy

Have you ever felt tired, defeated, as if you are only existing one day at a time, minute by minute without joy. As if you might have lost or misplaced it like keys, or a child’s toy?

How is it even possible to lose joy, it’s not something you can touch, or money can buy, you can’t keep it in your pocket or hold it in your hand, so how does joy become lost?

There are things that can bring joy that can be bought with money, or a person, but the actual emotion of feeling joy is not something you can bottle and hold onto. It is just a feeling. And that thing you bought to give you joy – it will unfortunately not last. It is only short-term relief.

So how do you lose joy?

We live in a negative world, we are constantly bombarded with bad, sad and upsetting news and situations on the television, social media or what someone shares with us in conversation. Even if this doesn’t influence you directly, it still subconsciously sits in your mind and starts to take root when you sleep in your dreams, when we are not aware of what is happening.

We can lose it when we go through a tough time at work, and stress levels are higher than normal. It can even start causing anxiety and depression, especially if you are struggling with your finances.

One morning you wake up, and you don’t want to get out of bed. Your fighting spirit, positivity and joy for the new day has just disappeared. Gone. And it is not that anything has significantly changed overnight, you still live in the same house, your kids are still going about their normal routines, the dogs are still happy to see you, and all is as it has been in your life. So, what has happened?

Well, feeling as if you have lost your joy has most likely happened when the space or your tank that you kept your joy in has dried up from not being filled daily with what it needs.

My favorite time is early in the morning, when I am alone at work. It is quiet, and no one has arrived yet. Just after the kids have been dropped off at school.

It’s still dark outside. I close my office door, open my blinds so that the morning can “arrive” through the windows. Put on my gospel playlist and read my bible. I spend time on my own, quietly with God. No distractions. The world is outside, it can wait and is not going anywhere.
After reading my bible or even a daily devotional, I pray- speak to my Father. I tell Him my fears, what I am grateful for, apologise for what I might have done to make Him sad, pray for His protection over my loved ones (family, friends and colleagues), and then just quietly sit there in
His presence savouring the peace that He brings. It’s like being hugged by the Holy Spirit, savouring it and having complete calm.

You see – that time spent with Him fills up the space where my joy is, my joy tank.

The sad reality is that life can so easily take that place, because you get to work 10 minutes later. And then the phone rings, or someone is waiting to see you. And you think – I will do it later, but you never do. So, your tank that holds your Joy is drained a little bit that day, and then it happens again, and again until it is totally empty.

Or it’s the school holidays, you get to work later and now everyone is there and you just dive into your work. Its weekend, you sleep in and watch that series everyone is talking about. It’s Sunday evening and you haven’t looked at your watch and realised the time, and now it’s too late to go to church.

And then, just like that – your joy is gone. You are left just stuck in a routine of just existing day in and day out.

This happened without you even realising it. The first sign for me is that I am tired all the time.

No matter how much I sleep or rest…. I am tired. And I don’t sleep well. From there the downhill just starts getting steeper and the descent is faster, and I find it harder and harder to cope every day. Did you know that stress is also a form of fear? But that is a discussion for another day.

So – what is the easiest way to get your joy back?

Make a consistent effort every morning to get up at the same time, even if it is school holidays (not if you are on holiday) – just get out of bed, because the longer you lie there the harder it is going to be to just get up. Think of one thing that you are looking forward to for that day – even if it is just making your favorite dinner that evening. Start with the small things. And make time to spend quality time with Father. There is no excuse for not having time. Did he make excuses when he went through the ultimate trauma, hurt and sadness when he sacrificed his son for us?
No – he did what had to be done, so make the time. Put on your favorite gospel playlist in the car on your way to work. Just that will start to energise you and make you feel calm.

If you have a difficult challenge coming up, an important meeting or have lost someone you love – He is there to not just give you Joy and strength, but He is your comfort too.

Start now, and the heaviness, anxiety and depression will start lifting like a cloud from your shoulders, your mind and your life.

He is your Joy! And you will do the most amazing things with His Joy. His Joy will spread through you and even if you don’t realize it, your Joy through Him will touch someone who needed it the most that day.

Do yourself a favour and look up Rend Collective, -“Joy Of The Lord”.

In this song is the secret and the answer to rediscovering your Joy! It is as clear as daylight! That is where and Who gives you joy!

Here are some of the lyrics:
Though the tears may fall, my song will rise
My song will rise to You
Though my heart may fail, my song will rise
My song will rise to You
While there’s breath in my lungs
I will praise you, Lord
In the dead of night, I’ll lift my eyes
I’ll lift my eyes to You
Though the waters rise, I’ll lift my eyes
I’ll lift my eyes to You
While there’s hope in this heart
I will praise you, Lord
The joy of the Lord is my strength
The joy of the Lord is my strength
In the darkness, I’ll dance
In the shadows, I’ll sing
The joy of the Lord is my strength
