Family hike offers a different view of Meiringspoort

Walkers will have a rare opportunity to experience Meiringspoort from a completely different perspective when the Meiringspoort Family Hike takes place on Sunday, 11 October.

The hike follows a day after the annual Meiringspoort Half Marathon and gives families, casual walkers and more experienced hikers the opportunity to explore the poort on foot.

The event is being made possible by the current repair work in Meiringspoort. While vehicle access remains restricted, pedestrians are temporarily able to enter the poort over weekends when construction work is not taking place.

Once repairs are completed and the road is reopened to normal traffic, opportunities to walk through the poort in this way are expected to come to an end.

Meiringspoort suffered extensive flood damage earlier this year. Temporary repairs are currently under way as part of efforts to reopen the route to vehicles.

The Family Hike starts at 08:00 from the picnic area at the Varkenskraal entrance. The route is an out-and-back walk, allowing participants to decide how far they would like to go before turning around.

Those who complete the full route to the waterfall will cover approximately 16 km.

Entry costs R100 per person. Transport is also being arranged from the Oudtshoorn Civic Centre, departing at 07:00.

Participants are encouraged to bring enough water, food for the walk, sunscreen and suitable walking shoes. A basic first-aid kit is also required.
