Have you heard the expression “Facing my giants”? Who are those giants and where did the expression come from?
It means having a big obstacle in your path, perhaps a problem that seems impossible to overcome. It might be an incident in your life which prevents you from doing something. It might be something at work, at home or even in your mind.
Our business had a giant standing in our way, something that could have a negative impact on our future. The problem seemed so big that I struggled to concentrate on the task at hand.
My first instinct was to panic and to just get away. I went to a very dear friend who encouraged me and prayed with me. We sat on her porch, drinking coffee. The peace calmed the storm in my heart.
She asked me if I had, at any time, asked God for more faith. “Yes, I did a while ago, but it’s not funny at a time like this,” I answered her. We both laughed, but come to think of it, what better way to grow your faith by having to believe that God will make the impossible possible. Do we even sometimes realise what we are asking for?
I tried to make my own plans. I racked my brains, and my actual work just started lagging further and further behind. The next day was D-day. We had less than 24 hours to get the giant problem sorted.
At 20:00 that night, a huge miracle happened, and the problem was resolved. The next day started like any other and we could continue as we did every day.
It was not something I did or could even do – it was a miracle. God opened a door and made the impossible happen. He slayed the giant. All the time spent worrying was energy wasted the previous day trying to fix something that was humanly impossible.
In the Bible Goliath was hailed as a giant and David who later became king of the Israelites, faced this giant. He faced the giant on behalf of a whole nation, and he won with God’s help.
There are many scriptures to help us when we have to face giants:
Joshua 1:9. “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
Psalm 27:1. “The Lord is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear? The Lord is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?”
Isaiah 41:10. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
2 Corinthians 4:8-9. “We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”
2 Corinthians 12:9-10. “But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.’ Therefore, I will boast all the more gladly about my weaknesses, so that Christ’s power may rest on me. That is why, for Christ’s sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong.”
Philippians 4:12-13. “I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want. I can do all this through him who gives me strength.”
Remember when you are facing giants, He is for you and with you. Who can be against you? You are precious to Him, and He will get you through whatever you are facing, you are never alone.
