The Klein Karoo is home to a va-riety of snakes, scorpions and spiders, some of which can pose a threat to humans. However, most of these creatures are either harmless or only mildly venomous.
Amongst the most common highly venomous snakes found in the region are the Cape Cobra, Boomslang, and Puff Adder. When it comes to scorpions and spiders, the Rough Thicktail Scorpion and the Black Button Spider are highly venomous.
High temperatures and a lack of water often cause snakes to move around in search of water, food and shade.
It’s worth remembering that snakes are naturally shy and will avoid human contact whenever possible. They generally strike only when threatened or injured.
To stay safe, stick to well-trodden paths, remain alert, and give any snake you encounter plenty of space to move away. Avoid trying to identify or handle it.
In the event of a bite or sting, keep the victim calm and immobilised, and transport them to the nearest hospital as soon as possible. If possible, photograph the snake, spider or scorpion and send the photograph via Whats-App to 082 494 2039 for positive identification.
Do not apply a tourniquet, cut or suck the wound, use ice or very hot water, give the victim alcohol, or inject antivenom unless under a doctor’s supervision.
For assistance with snake removal, the Oudtshoorn Municipality can be contacted on 044 203 7800.
