While the nation scrambled for Black Friday bargains on 28 November, Oudtshoorn residents were greeted by strong winds that caused widespread disruption across the town.
Roofs were ripped from homes, trees were uprooted, and streets were strewn with debris as gusts of up to 50 km/h swept through the area, leaving residents and authorities scrambling to deal with the aftermath.
South Africa is no stranger to weather and climate hazards, which can include floods, severe thunderstorms, storm surges, drought, tropical cyclones, landslides, veld fires, extreme heat, cold snaps, and snowfall.
These events often carry high social, environmental, and economic impacts, as residents in Oudtshoorn experienced firsthand.
The municipality was quick to respond, deploying teams to clear debris, assess damage, and ensure public safety. “Our teams were working hard after the strong winds and heavy rain,” said a municipal spokesperson.
Power outages affected multiple areas, with Eskom temporarily switching off electricity to repair faults on power lines. Roads were also disrupted, with fallen trees and pooling water reported in several locations.

The South African Weather Service stressed the importance of heeding weather warnings to mi-nimise the risk of injury, loss of life, and property damage. Last Friday’s storm highlighted how ra-pidly conditions can deteriorate once storms intensify.
For future incidents, residents should take note of the following:
• Monitor official updates;
• Seek shelter during approaching storms;
• Move vehicles under cover where possible;
• Avoid driving through flooded areas; and
• Report fallen trees, flooding, or structural damage to municipal authorities.
Social media reports and observations confirmed that the storm caused flooding in low-lying areas, structural damage from strong winds, pro-perty and vehicle damage, electricity disruptions, and traffic delays due to blocked roads and reduced visibility.
Despite the rainfall, dam levels in the area remain critically low, a reminder that the region continues to face challenges in water security.
