The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) is urging beneficiaries not to ignore SMS notifications calling them to undergo social grant reviews. Upon receiving an SMS, beneficiaries are encouraged to visit their nearest SASSA office to complete the review process and avoid the suspension or lapsing of their grant.
Social grant reviews are conducted in terms of the Social Assistance Act to ensure that SASSA continues to pay the correct grant to eligible and deserving beneficiaries.
Beneficiaries must ensure that their contact details are updated on the SASSA system. Updated information assists with confirming eligibility and life certification, and strengthens communication between the beneficiary and the agency. It also enables beneficiaries to receive important notifications that may affect the status of their grants.
Beneficiaries are required to undergo the review process to verify their continued eligibility for social assistance and to prevent fraud or duplicate claims, which could lead to the misuse of public funds, an offence in terms of the law.
Currently, grant reviews are conducted at designated SASSA offices or service centres. In future, the Agency may introduce online review options to help reduce congestion at physical offices and minimise travel costs for beneficiaries.
