3rd Year for the De Rust Open Studios

This beautiful and quant town is just a 30 km drive from Oudtshoorn and the entrace to the magnificent Meiringspoort, where you can visit the Meiringspoort Waterfall, and well-known “Herrie se klip”, a character in one of CJ Langenhoven’s stories of old. This is the third year that De Rust will host the “De Rust Open Studios” on Saturday 23 September and Sunday 24 September. Studios will open their doors from 09:00 to 17:00 on both days. Local artists, including painters, blacksmiths, bonsai growers, creators of artisanal soaps and ice cream, woodworkers, and skilled makers of collectible furniture and glasswork, graciously invite the public into their studios. In the serene village of De Rust, about 30 km from Oudtshoorn, is a usually tranquil hamlet.
Something extraordinary is unfolding on the weekend of September 23 and 24. ‘De Rust Open Studios’, now in its third year, infuses this peaceful town with a vibrant burst of life and creativity.

This event opens a unique window into the artistic world as local talents, including painters, blacksmiths, bonsai growers, creators of artisanal soaps and ice-cream, woodworkers, and skilled makers of collectible furniture and glasswork, graciously invite the public into their studios.

Among these artisans are professionals such as Hermann Niebuhr and Diane Mclean, lending their expertise to the rich tapestry of De Rust’s creative scene. If your journey takes you from Oudtshoorn, don’t miss a visit to the De Rustica Olive Estate, a must-visit destination.

Here, you can savour the flavours of their award-winning olive oil and immerse yourself in an art exhibition featuring the works of Janet Dixon, Glendine Chisholm and Johann Theron.

And for those seeking culinary delights, indulge in a breakfast buffet that promises to delight all your senses. Cafe Rust and Pluim (Schoeman Gallery), serve as galleries showcasing the talent of local artists. To embark on your artistic journey, start by grabbing a coffee from one of the charming spots along the main road. You can easily obtain a map or simply scan a QR code for guidance.

Keep an eye out for distinctive flags outside each studio, marking them as participants in this creative endeavour, as shown in the attached photograph. These flags are your invitation to step inside and discover the hidden treasures within.

The studios will be welcoming visitors from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both Saturday, the 23rd, and Sunday, the 24th of September. ‘De Rust Open Studios’ is not just an event; it’s a chance to connect with the heartbeat of this village, to witness the enchanting magic that unfolds behind closed doors, and to celebrate the creative spirit that thrives in De Rust.
