Holidaymakers urged to prepare cars and children for safer road trips

With the winter school holidays under way and many families heading out on the roads, motorists are being encouraged to prepare both their vehicles and young passengers before setting off.

According to the Motor Industry Workshop Association (MIWA), a safe and stress-free holiday journey starts well before leaving home.

MIWA Chairperson Dewald Ranft said one of the most important safety measures is ensuring child car seats are correctly installed. International research indicates that up to 70% of child seats are fitted incorrectly, significantly reducing the protection they provide in the event of a crash. Parents are also advised to ensure the seat is appropriate for their child’s age, height and weight, while older children should always wear seatbelts.

Although South Africa recorded a 5% decline in road crashes and fatalities during the 2025/26 festive season, with 1 427 fatalities still reported, Ranft warned that road safety should never be taken for granted.

Long journeys can also be challenging for young children. MIWA recommends taking regular breaks to allow children to stretch their legs and burn off energy, helping to reduce driver distractions and make the trip more enjoyable.

Motorists are encouraged to have their vehicles checked before travelling, paying particular attention to tyres, brakes, lights, battery condition and fluid levels.

Carrying an emergency kit containing a torch, first-aid kit, phone charger or power bank, and emergency contact numbers is also recommended.

To keep children comfortable and entertained, families should pack healthy snacks, plenty of drinking water and wet wipes.

Traditional car games, audiobooks and downloaded movies or educational apps can also help keep children occupied, particularly in areas with limited mobile reception.

Ranft said a little preparation can make a significant difference. “With proper planning, families can travel with greater peace of mind and focus on enjoying quality time together during the school holidays.”
