THE wine awards season is in full swing and De Krans Wines from Calitzdorp is bringing home several awards!
Double gold and gold at Vitis Vinifera
De Krans earned a double gold and gold award at the recent 2019 Vitis Vinifera Awards.
The popular De Krans Premium Moscato Natural Sweet Perlé Wine 2019 was the recipient of the double gold medal. This semi-sweet wine with a fizz has quickly become one of the best-selling wines from De Krans.
Hot on its heels with a gold medal is the De Krans Basket Press Cabernet Sauvignon 2018, which is a very accessible wine due to the use of the unique basket press at De Krans with its very gentle pressing action.
What makes the Vitis Vinifera Awards unique is the fact that it embraces the phrase: “For the people by the people”. Wines are tasted blind by everyday consumers, who make up the judging panel, with the requirement of having a certain level of professional wine background and/or experience.
Victorious at CAPPA
De Krans was one of the big winners at this year’s Cape Port Producers Association (CAPPA) Port & Wine Challenge, with the results announced on 5 September.
The De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve 2017 and Cape Tawny Limited Release port-style wines were named as two of the Top 10 Cape Port Style winners, with the De Krans Cape Vintage Reserve Port 2007 one of two winners to be recognised in the Museum Class category. The De Krans Tritonia Calitzdorp Blend 2017, Touriga Nacional 2017 and Tritonia White 2018 each secured a spot on the list for the Top 10 Cape Portuguese Wines.
A hat-trick with Tim Atkin
De Krans Wines in Calitzdorp’s Cape Vintage Reserve was for the third year in a row announced as the Overall Fortified Wine of the Year by revered UK authority Tim Atkin MW, in his highly anticipated annual review of South African wines. This year the 2017 vintage took the honour, as well as scoring an impressive 96 points.
In addition three of De Krans’s wines scored 90 plus points each. The deserving recipients were the De Krans Touriga Nacional 2017 (90 points), Garden Route Sauvignon Blanc 2019 (91 points) and the De Krans Tritonia Calitzdorp Blend 2017 (93 points).
Atkin, a British Master of Wine and accomplished wine commentator with extensive experience of South African wines, tasted a total of 2 115 South African wines for his 2019 Special Report.
160 of these wines were awarded 95 points or more.
According to Atkin the wines he listed in his report compare with the best of any other wine producing country.
