The Garden Route Badgers launched their Cricket South Africa One Day Cup campaign in emphatic fashion this weekend, securing a seven-wicket victory over the Northern Cape Heat in Oudtshoorn.
Chasing a challenging 271 for victory, the Badgers produced a record-breaking performance, reaching 275/3 in 47.5 overs to register the highest successful run chase in SWD history in a 50-over List A match. The victory was built on a monumental opening partnership that laid the foundation for a memorable win.
After winning the toss, Northern Cape elected to bat first on a swelte-ring day. They found themselves in early trouble at 53/3 before captain Ronan Herrmann steadied the innings with a superb 128 off 115 deliveries, striking four sixes and eight fours.
Supported by Morné Venter (43) and Taheer Isaacs (33), the visitors posted a competitive 270/7 in their allotted 50 overs. Zack Momberg (3/56) and Banele Cele (2/38) were the standout performers with the ball for the hosts. In reply, the Badgers’ openers took complete control.
Ruan Terblanche delivered a career-defining performance, scoring his maiden List A century with an unbeaten 133 from 134 balls, including three sixes and 10 fours. Battling severe cramps in the heat, Terblanche eventually retired hurt after anchoring a record 275-run opening stand with Yaseen Valli, who contributed a fluent 75.
The home side cruised past the target with 13 balls to spare, sealing an impressive start to their campaign.
The Badgers will look to maintain their momentum when they face Mpumalanga Rhinos in White River on Wednesday, followed by a clash against Eastern Storm at Willowmoore Park in Benoni on Saturday.
