It was a weekend dominated by bowlers in the SWD Premier League, with low totals and tight contests highlighting the latest round of fixtures.
The defending champions, Union Stars I, suffered a heavy 80-run defeat against their Oudtshoorn neighbours, Harlequins Forces. Batting first, Harlequins were bowled out for a modest 131 in 37,2 overs.
Marco Jansen top-scored with 31, while Lastio Williams (4/32) and Reagon Rhode (2/20) were the pick of the bowlers for Union Stars I. Despite restricting Harlequins to a manageable total, Union Stars I faltered badly with the bat and were dismissed for just 51 in 24,3 overs.
Theodore Qusheka (4/18) and Pheko Moletsane (4/19) ripped through the batting line-up, each claiming four wickets, while Liam Alder chipped in with 2/12. Harlequins Forces secured a convincing 80-run victory in a match dominated by disciplined bowling.
In contrast, Union Stars II held their nerve in a thrilling encounter against New Dawn Park. New Dawn Park were bowled out for 94 in 21,6 overs, with Dimitri Carelse contributing 21. Banele Cele (4/34), Zack Momberg (3/34) and Elridge Booysen (2/14) led the charge with the ball.
Union Stars II’s chase was far from straightforward. They reached 97/9 in 21,3 overs, edging to a dramatic one-wicket win. Mario Tarentaal (30) and Dylen Williams (29) provided crucial runs, while Brandon Scheepers (3/18), Tyrese Karelse (3/45) and Kyle Jacobs (2/24) kept the pressure on with the ball.
Meanwhile, the scheduled match in George between Pacaltsdorp United and Sussex was abandoned due to a wet outfield.
