South Western Districts (SWD) Cricket has officially announced the Garden Route Badgers’ contracted squad for the 2026/27 domestic season, with former Proteas batsman Janneman Malan headlining the list of new signings.
The Oudtshoorn-based franchise enjoyed a competitive 2025/26 campaign across all formats and will now look to build further momentum as Cricket South Africa introduces a revamped domestic structure for the upcoming season.
The biggest boost for the Badgers is the arrival of 30-year-old Malan, who represented South Africa in 23 One-Day Internationals and 11 T20 Internationals. During his international career, Malan scored three centuries, including a career-best 177. Cricket runs deep in the Malan family, with his brothers André and Pieter both also having represented South Africa at various levels.
The Badgers, however, will bid farewell to several key players. Star batsman and white-ball captain George van Heerden has secured a move to the Knights, who recently earned promotion to Division One.
Van Heerden was a consistent performer during his two seasons with the Badgers. Fellow top-order batsman Ruan Terblanche, after three productive seasons with SWD, has signed with Boland following an impressive run with the bat. All-rounder Kyle Jacobs will continue his career with Northern Cape Heat.
The Badgers have further strengthened their squad with the addition of hard-hitting Dolphins batsman Slade van Staden and Titans all-rounder Leo Sadler. Fast bowlers Modise Maloka, from the Knights, and Nipho Mpongose, from Northern Cape, have also joined the squad to bolster the bowling attack.
Promising youngster Enathi Khitshini, who captained the SA Schools team last season, has been rewarded with a high-performance contract.
Head coach Lotle Sesesle, assistant coach Warren Bell and strength and conditioning coach Tyler Easton have all had their contracts renewed as the union aims for promotion to Division One within the next two-year promotion and relegation cycle.
SWD Cricket CEO Albertus Kennedy expressed confidence in the squad, saying the union’s ambition is to build a winning culture and establish the Badgers among South Africa’s top domestic teams.
