THE Six Gun Grill SWD cricket team will travel to Polokwane this week for a must win match against Limpopo Impala in the Cricket South Africa Division 2 Four-Day competition.

Captain Jean du Plessis will need an outright victory in his team’s ambitions to win the four-day competition. The match will start today (Thursday, 27 January). SWD can’t afford a slip-up against the home side and a clinical performance will be crucial. SWD is currently third on the log with 49,32 points after three matches.

The Tuskers from KZN Inland is the log leader with 73.72 points after four matches, followed by the Northern Cape Heat with their 63.18 points after three matches.

All-rounder Onke Nyaku had to withdraw from the team due to a hamstring injury whist Jhedli van Briesies is fit again after he missed the previous match. Oudtshoorn’s own Herschell America will get his first taste of red-ball cricket this season as he replaced Renaldo Meyer. America became SWD’s new bowling hero in September 2021 when he turned plenty of heads as he rose to the summit of the wicket takers’ chart after the completion of Pool A of the Cricket South Africa T20 knock-out competition which took place in Kimberley.

Leus du Plooy (252 runs at an average of 84.00) is currently second on the batting averages and his teammate, Sean Whitehead, second on the bowling averages – 21 wickets at an average of 10.42.

The team for the weekend is: Yaseen Valli, Blade Capell, Du Plessis (captain), Du Plooy, André Malan, Van Briesies, Whitehead, Pheko Moletsane, America, Marcello Piedt, and Sintu Majiza. The 12th man is Hanno Kotze.
