Keswick has quietly stolen a piece of my heart. For years I thought Switzerland was that place.
The place where my soul could finally exhale. The place that would somehow complete the picture I had painted in my mind.
Then I found myself here. Tiny rivers weaving through endless green fields. Stone bridges that have watched generations come and go.
Gentle streams that seem to sing their own worship song as they tumble over smooth rocks. Everywhere I look there is life. Quiet, unhurried, beautiful life. And then I realized something. It was never about Switzerland. It was never about Keswick either.
It has always been about Who is there. Who walks beside you. Who fills your heart. Who shapes the words that leave your mouth. That is what changes everything. The same place can look empty to one person and holy to another.
The scenery does not determine our joy. The condition of our hearts often does. As I sat beside one of these little rivers today, I thought of David.
“He makes me lie down in green pastures, He leads me beside quiet waters, He refreshes my soul.” (Psalm 23:2 and 3)
Refresh. That is exactly what Jesus does. Every morning He gives us another beginning. Another opportunity. Another invitation to walk closely with Him.
Yesterday’s failures do not intimidate Him. Yesterday’s weakness does not surprise Him. Yesterday’s mistakes are not the conversation He wants to have.
“Though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow.” (Isai 1:18)
“As far as the east is from the west, so far has He removed our transgressions from us.” (Psalm 103:12)
Sometimes it feels as though the enemy remembers every failure with remarkable detail. If I am honest, sometimes I do too.
Jesus does not. He calls me forward.
He reminds me that mercy is new every morning. Lamentations 3:22 and 23 has become more than a promise. It has become a way of living. So I sit beside these rivers, listening to the water flow, and one thought keeps filling my heart.
He loves me. He loves me. He loves me. Everything else is simply something we will walk through together.
The older I become, the more I realise how precious today really is. This moment. This conversation. This sunrise . This cup of coffee. This walk. This laughter with people I love.
Tomorrow has never been promised to any of us. James reminds us that our lives are like a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. That truth no longer frightens me. It teaches me to be fully present. To notice.
To worship. To love well. I have also discovered something unexpected along the journey.
The closer I walk with Jesus, the less I feel the need to constantly ask Him for things. My heart changes. My desires become quieter.
His presence becomes enough. Somewhere along the way I stop chasing what I thought I needed and start resting in the One I have already found. Paul understood this when he wrote, “I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation.” Philippians 4:12.
That secret has never been a place. It has always been a Person. So today my prayer for you is simple. May you want Jesus more than you wanted Him yesterday.
May you fall deeper in love with the Shepherd who has never stopped pur-suing you.
May His presence become more precious than any destination you could ever visit.
And may you discover that the greatest reward this life offers is not found in beautiful places.
It is found in walking every single day with the One who created them. (VICKY LUDICK)
