IN Matthew 22:1–14, Jesus tells the parable of a king who prepares a wedding banquet for his son. Many guests are invited, yet not everyone responds.
Eventually, the banquet hall is filled, but when the king enters, he notices one guest who is not wearing the proper wedding garment.
The man has no excuse, and he is removed from the celebration and cast into outer darkness, where there is weeping and gnashing of teeth.
Jesus concludes the parable with the sobering words: “For many are called, but few are chosen.”
What does this wedding garment represent?
Revelation 19:7–8 provides the answer. Speaking of the marriage supper of the Lamb, it says that the Bride of Christ is “clothed with fine linen, bright and clean,” and explains that “the fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.”
Our clothing represents a life transformed by Christ, a life marked by holiness, obedience, and righteousness. This does not mean we earn our salvation through good works.
We are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ alone.
However, genuine faith always produces a changed life. When we come to Christ, He welcomes us exactly as we are: broken, sinful, and in need of His mercy. But He loves us too much to leave us that way.
Through the work of the Holy Spirit, God transforms us from sinners into saints, shaping us to become more like Jesus each day.
Old habits, sinful desires, and worldly ways begin to lose their grip as we grow in obedience and surrender to Him.
If your life has never been changed by Christ, today is an invitation to respond to His call.
Jesus is still inviting people into His Kingdom. Receive His grace, surrender your life to Him, and allow Him to clothe you in His righteousness.
