Motorists travelling between Oudtshoorn and George can expect wider lanes and improved road safety once the R227,2 million N9/N12 upgrade is completed, with June 2028 remaining the target.
The project began in October 2025 and covers approximately 5 km of the main route, as well as repairs and resealing along about 2 km of the Waboomskraal Road.
Western Cape Infrastructure Minister Tertuis Simmers visited the construction site on 15 October to assess progress.
Traffic lanes are being widened from 3,3 m to 3,7 m, while surfaced shoulders will increase from 1,5 m to 2 m. Work also includes an approximately 800 m retaining wall, improved drainage and new guardrails.
The Waboomskraal Road intersection with the N9/N12 is also being reconstructed.
According to the department, the project has generated 102 work opportunities towards a target of 240. Goods and services worth R8,5 million have been procured from targeted enterprises, against a target of R32,5 million.
“These figures represent opportunities for workers, local contractors and businesses to participate in building the infrastructure our province needs,” Simmers said.
Current construction includes earthworks, rock excavation and drainage improvements. Completion remains dependent on work proceeding as anticipated.
