South Africans will head to the polls on 4 November 2026 for the next local government elections, after President Cyril Ramaphosa officially confirmed the date, with the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) welcoming the announcement and immediately ramping up preparations.
The elections will determine new municipal councils across the country and come at the end of the current five-year term of local government structures.
Following the announcement, the IEC confirmed it has intensified its planning and operational readiness for the elections. This includes logistical preparation, voter education programmes, and ensuring that registration systems are in place for eligible voters.
Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo emphasised that the confirmation of the date allows the Commission to proceed with structured preparations aimed at ensuring free and fair elections.
However, the IEC also noted that the announcement is not yet the formal proclamation of the election date. The official proclamation will still be issued by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, after which the voters’ roll will be closed.
The IEC has urged all eligible South Africans to ensure they are correctly registered in the voting district where they live. Voters who have moved or are not yet registered are encouraged to update their details ahead of election day.
A national voter registration weekend is also scheduled for 20 and 21 June, allowing citizens to register or confirm their details at local voting stations or via the IEC’s online platform.
Local government elections are seen as a key indicator of public sentiment, often reflecting voter satisfaction with service delivery at municipal level.
They also play a crucial role in shaping governance in communities, affecting issues such as water supply, roads, housing, and local economic development.
With preparations now officially underway, political parties are expected to intensify campaigning in the coming months as the country moves closer to the municipal elections.
