A groundbreaking development is on the horizon for the Klein Karoo, with plans underway to establish the Klein Karoo Airport Training and Logistics Hub at the Oudtshoorn Airport. This ambitious project aims to position the town as a central player in aviation training, logistics, and light industrial development.
Owned by the Oudtshoorn Municipality, the 214-hectare licensed aerodrome will soon become home to a modern logistics park designed to support aviation-related services, warehousing, agri-processing, cold storage, and other light industrial enterprises serving the Klein and Groot Karoo as well as the Garden Route.
Currently, the airport is managed and operated by TFASA (Test Flying Academy of South Africa) on the council’s behalf.
According to the project proposal, the Klein Karoo Airport Hub will operate as a commercial real estate development, offering tailored facilities for logistics and aviation-support businesses. Its mission is to create a strategically located logistics park that drives regional economic development while its vision is to become the most efficient and innovative airport-linked hub in the area.
Future plans include the development of road upgrades, enhanced services, and improved infrastructure, which will pave the way for the airport precinct to become a vibrant economic centre.
The first phase of the project, scheduled to commence next year, will include the construction of bulk infrastructure, such as environmental impact assessments (EIA), roads, water, sanitation, and electrical services. The second phase, planned to commence in 2028, will focus on office parks, hangars, and facilities for aviation training initiatives, as well as attracting logistics and light industrial investors.
Sustainability is also a key focus. The park will incorporate solar photovoltaic (PV) energy systems and innovative water augmentation solutions, with the goal of becoming a self-sufficient, eco-friendly development.
Beyond infrastructure, the project promises significant job creation and economic growth for Oudtshoorn and surrounding communities.
Local suppliers and service providers will be prioritised to stimulate the town’s economy and ensure that benefits are widely shared.
“The initiative will not only attract new businesses but also invest in local training and skills development,” a municipal representative said. “This will keep money circulating in the local economy and create opportunities for new ventures to emerge.”
The cost of the project is R23 million and is allocated as follows:
Planning and design: R2 000 000, upgrade of the airport facility: R5 000 000, roads: R9 000 000, sewage and water network: R4 000 000, the electricity network: R2 000 000, and beautification: R1 000 000.
Once completed, the Klein Karoo Airport Training and Logistics Hub is expected to become a key driver of regional development, firmly establishing Oudtshoorn as a hub of aviation and logistical innovation in the region. (MALISSA SPIES)
