In a step towards advancing disability inclusion, Disability Oudtshoorn (DO) and the Association for People with Disabilities (APD) solidified a long-term partnership during a meeting last week. Led by APD representative Mr. Johnwin Manuel, the discussions centred on aligning resources, amplifying advocacy efforts, and addressing critical barriers faced by individuals with disabilities in the Oudtshoorn region.

The partnership will prioritise joint awareness campaigns, including APD’s Walk a Mile in My Wheels (a mobility-awareness initiative) and the Nappy Run (advocating for dignity and healthcare access). Additionally, the organizations would like to expand adaptive sports opportunities and provide support for athletes recovering from life-altering injuries. A central focus will be advocating for improved accessible transportation which both groups identified as a critical priority.

Manuel outlined APD’s community-driven programmes during the meeting, emphasising their focus on empowerment, skills development, and peer support. DO will visit APD’s facilities in June to explore hands-on collaboration opportunities, including shared training workshops and resource pooling.

This partnership is more than about shared goals. It is also about building a community where dignity and access are non-negotiable. DO hosts monthly support meetings at the Health Centre South Coast (HCSC) for persons with disabilities.
