A Medical outreach in Matjiesrivier assisted 144 people on Saturday, 22 August, bringing much-needed healthcare closer to residents who often live more than 50 km from the nearest medical facility.
The outreach, held at Swartberg Country Manor, followed a difficult period for the area after destructive rains caused rockslides that blocked access roads and left Matjiesrivier cut off from the outside world for an extended period.
Many of those who attended the outreach are farmworkers for whom a visit to a doctor can mean considerable travelling costs and an entire day away from home and work.
During the outreach, volunteer doctors examined and treated 73 patients, while 71 patients received dental care – a record number for the outreach team.
The day involved more than just medical consultations. Volunteers assisted with administration, patient intake and vital-sign checks, while others handled the pharmacy and dispensing of medication. A kitchen team also provided food and refreshments to patients and volunteers.
Doctors Anso Killian and Rene Smith provided medical care, while Dr Hanco Blignaut and Dr Samuel Nothnagel of Udent Dental Solutions attended to dental patients.
Organisers thanked the medical professionals and volunteers who gave their time to assist the Matjiesrivier community and helped make the outreach possible.
