Oudtshoorn Municipality held their annual Mayoral Sport Awards on 27 November 2025 at the Banquet hall. This special event is to honour all the amazing sport ambassadors in and around Oudtshoorn.
These include sport stars, coaches, teams and administrators. Sport and sporting events play a big role in the economy of the town, and bring many visitors who support local businesses and tourist attractions.
Here are the category winners for 2025:
PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORTS TEAM
Winner: Saturnus Drum Majorettes (Saturnus Primary School) The team claimed 1st place at the SAMCA Nationals 2025 in the Primary President’s Challenge Cup, 1st as the Primary Flag Group, 1st as the Pom Non-Prop Group, 1st at Display, and Small Drill. Overall, 2nd in SA Drum Majorettes Mace Group and Small Drill Squad; and 3rd in the Sub Leader category – Small Drill.
PRIMARY SCHOOL COACH
Winner: Jamie Lee Botha (Saturnus Primary Drum Majorettes) Coached the team to 1st place at National Championships in multiple categories, 1st in Flag Group, 1st in Pom Non-Prop Group, 1st in Small Drill – Display, and 1st in Small Drill. Overall, 2nd in Mace Group and Small Drill Squad; and 3rd in Small Drill – Sub Leader. Also led SWD champions in the Premier – Presidents Liga.
PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORTSWOMAN
Winner: Helena Lourens (Wesbank Primary School) 1st in 1200m at Eden Athletics Meeting and Western Cape Athletics Championships; 3rd at SA Athletics Championships; qualified for Eden Duathlon and earned provincial colours; also secured colours in cross-country.
PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORTMAN
Winner: Nickyle Augustus 1st in 100m at SA Athletics U/12; fastest U/12 100m athlete in South Africa; received sponsorship from ASA, Wayde van Niekerk, and Akani Simbine; participated in U/13 A Craven Week Rugby and U/12 SWD Rugby; represented Eden and Western Cape in athletics.
ROLL OF HONOR
Raymondo Botha, who passed away earlier this yea, played for All Blacks RFC, Collegians RFC, and Bridgton RFC.
LEGENDS OF SPORT
Jason Jafta (Marathon): 32nd Comrades Marathon (bronze); 29th Outeniqua Marathon (gold); 40th Cango Marathon (gold). Garnett Wicomb (Tennis): Captain of SA 80+ men’s team at ITF World Championships in Croatia (05 – 11 October 2025).
Johann Coetzer (Athletics): Gold in 100m and 200m (new SWD records) at ASWD; gold in long jump at SA Masters 2025; national colours in long jump and high jump (2025 renewal).
Isak Boshoff (Cycling): Oudtshoorn Cycling Club member since 1966; 37 year club champion; represented SWD (1971-1984), OP (1969), NTVL (1970), and SANDF (1984-2015).
HIGH SCHOOL COACH
Winner: Megan Presher, National team coach (Elite Division: 3rd place, 10 athletes earned SA colours); provincial 1st in all 10 categories; coached SWD team to 2nd at interprovincial; only SWD team in A Division (Elite), achieving 4th overall and 3rd at nationals.
HIGH SCHOOL SPORTS TEAM
Winner: Oudtshoorn Vaardigheidskool Tug-O-War (460kg) 2nd place (silver) at SA Junior Championships; 4th at Western Cape – Westcliff Tournament.
HIGH SCHOOL SPORTSWOMAN
Winner: Tamaré Stewart won all matches at ITP as Eden’s No. 1 girls’ player; selected for SA Schools team tour to London (June 2025); 6th consecutive year as No. 1 at Eden trials; won all singles at Synergy Cup; Mandela Summer Challenge girls O/16 singles winner; top 20 TSA rankings (O/15: 16th; O/16: 19th).
HIGH SCHOOL SPORTSMAN
Winner: Fourie Delport, No. 1 boys’ tennis player at Langenhoven Gimnasium (age 14); Eden O/15 team member; Eden Grand Prix boys O/14 singles winner (defeated SA No. 1); undefeated in all singles and doubles at Synergy Cup O/15; undefeated school tennis season; SA Schools team at international tournament in London (July 2025).
SCHOOL SPORT ADMINISTRATOR
Winner: C.M Arries managed 9 cyclists on Eden team (U/17 boys top 30/SA: 8th; U/15 boys top 20/SA); 2 on Western Cape team (top 10/SA); recipient of 2025 Premier’s Award.
SPORTSPERSON WITH A DISABILITY
Winner: Roberto Harmse represented Boland Blind School at the BCSA T20 National in Stellenbosch; earned provincial colours for the Boland Blind Cricket Team; scored match-winning 54* in provincial One Day vs. Free State; recognised as one of Boland’s most promising stars.
JUNIOR SPORTSWOMAN
Winner: Lume de Koker SA Championships, Gold in trampoline gymnastics (Level 7).
JUNIOR SPORTSMAN
Winner: Shaun Boshoff, 3rd place at International Strongman Games in the USA; official world record for 291kg axle bar (18-inch).
SENIOR SPORT ADMINISTRATOR
Winner: Karin Bence. Only woman in SA cycling qualified as national referee for road, track, and mountain bike; international recognition as top referee; chief referee at SA Elite Road and Time Trial Championships (2024/2025), Tour de Cup (2024/2025), and Cape Town Cycle Tour (first woman appointed, with 32,000 riders).
SENIOR SPORTS TEAM
Winner: Union Stars First Team 2024/2025 SWD Premier League winners.
SENIOR COACH
Winner: Elridge Booysen (Union Stars) Head coach for 2024/2025 SWD Cricket Premier League winners.
SENIOR SPORTSWOMAN
Winner: Chaunique Bruce (Kickboxing) 2x gold at Battle of the Karoo, Eden Champs, Western Cape Champs, and SA National Kickboxing Championships.
SENIOR SPORTMAN
Winner: Wian Grebe (Kickboxing) Gold and silver at Battle of the Karoo; 2x gold at Eden Champs and SAKA National Championships.
