From blossom to many delights

Olga end Rob Hofmeyr from Granaat & Co.

Just outside Oudtshoorn, Rob and Olga Hofmeyr have built a reputation for creating memorable food experiences that celebrate local produce, creativity and the changing seasons.

Through their latest venture, Granaat & Co., the couple and business partners have turned one of nature’s most striking fruits – the pomegranate – into the star of an extraordinary culinary journey.

This dining experience, “Pomegranate – From Blossom to Fruit”, showcased the remarkable versatility of the fruit through a carefully curated five-course menu that explored every stage of the pomegranate’s journey, from delicate blossom-inspired flavours to the rich complexity of the fully ripened fruit. Even the table and dress code were inspired by the star of the show. The concept was about much more than serving a meal.

“We wanted to tell the story of the pomegranate through food,” says Olga. “It’s a fruit with incredible depth and versatility, and we wanted guests to experience in just how many ways it can be enjoyed.”

The menu highlighted the pomegranate in a variety of forms. Guests were welcomed with a refreshing Pomegranate Bellini and delicate caprino bites dusted with pomegranate petal powder and pistachio. A trio of starters followed, featuring fresh pomegranate arils (the juicy ruby-red seeds), pomegranate balsamic reduction and pomegranate seed oil, each adding layers of flavour and texture.

Even the accompanying bread incorporated pomegranate peel flour, proving that every part of the fruit has culinary value.
The fruit’s versatility continued to shine in the first course, where radicchio and ricotta ravioli were served in a light Brie fondue and finished with pomegranate molasses. A refreshing surprise during the evening was pomegranate juice, carbonated in kegs at Thorny Creek and served with a dash of gin.

For the main course, pomegranate-marinated lamb took centre stage. The meat was slow-cooked and glazed with pomegranate, creating a rich balance of sweetness and savoury depth.

The evening concluded with three elegant sweet treats, featuring Olga’s popular Russian Honey Cake with pomegranate cream, pomegranate chocolate infused with arils and finished with pomegranate-smoked peel salt, and pomegranate Turkish delight, paired with a pomegranate liqueur.

One of the most exciting aspects of this carefully curated menu is discovering new ways to use the pomegranate – from its fruit and flowers to its peel and even its leaves.

Beyond its culinary appeal, the pomegranate is celebrated worldwide for its health benefits, particularly its high antioxidant content and nutritional value. Yet for the Hofmeyr’s, its greatest strength lies in its ability to surprise.

Through Granaat & Co., Rob and Olga continue to demonstrate how a single ingredient can inspire an entire dining experience, transforming a humble fruit into a celebration of flavour, craftsmanship and creativity – it is a culinary delight with countless expressions and a perfect reflection of the innovation and passion that have become synonymous with Granaat & Co. and their Klein Karoo roots.

From drinks and appetisers to meat dishes and desserts, the possibilities seem endless. Be sure to book your seat for a culinary adventure when this remarkable couple, with their talent for flavour and innovation, plan their next Dinner Expression.
