Oudtshoorn School of Skills has received a generous donation of approximately R40 000 in gaming equipment, including headsets, keyboards, and mats, courtesy of SteelSeries. The donation will help prepare learners to take part in esports activities in the future.
Esports, short for electronic sports, refers to competitive gaming where players or teams compete in video games at various levels, from local school competitions to international tournaments.
Riaan Swart, head of ICT at the school, said the donation goes beyond gaming.
“People often underestimate gaming, but it builds problem-solving skills, teamwork, and focus. These are valuable in both schoolwork and sports,” he explai-ned.
Principal Jaco Ste-vens welcomed the donation, saying it opens new opportunities for learners.
“This equipment allows children to explore a passion they excel in. It’s about growth, inclusion, and creating new pathways for our learners,” he said.
The donation was made possible by Maryke Kennard, a former local resident and SteelSeries representative, known in the gaming world as Whamen. Maryke contacted Riaan directly to let him know about the equipment. Having gained international recognition in the gaming world, she hopes to inspire learners to pursue their interests.
“I want children to see that there’s room for their passions. If you love gaming, you can make it something meaningful,” she said.
On the day of the donation, second year learner Leathan Coetzee was the first to try out the new equipment.
“The gaming keyboard feels and looks amazing with its mechanical switches and the lighting. I’m really excited to start practising and maybe even compete one day,” he said.
Riaan added that while it will take time for learners to reach a competitive level, the donation is a strong first step towards building the school’s esports programme. (MALISSA SPIES)
