• Population growth in the Western Cape in the first quarter of 2020/2021 (July to September): The population of the Cape Winelands was expected to exceed one million by 2024. Overstrand and Bitou had population growth rates exceeding 3% a year. Kannaland, Oudtshoorn and Beaufort West had declining populations.

• Covid surge: Nelson Mandela Bay hospitals are being overwhelmed by the surge in Covid-19 cases in the metro, while medical staff are themselves falling ill, and showing signs of burnout. Authorities are blaming the surge on reckless behaviour and non-adherence to social distancing and hygiene protocols.

• Liquor inspections: The Western Cape Liquor Authority’s Compliance and Enforcement Unit will be conducting various liquor inspections during the Black Friday period to ensure adherence to all COVID-19 safety protocols and liquor licence conditions. According to a media statement from the Liquor Authority this year’s Black Friday sales bring with them the additional risk of an increase in the spread of Covid-19 and potential super spreader events.
