Truck drivers and transport operators are reminded that heavy vehicles and vehicles longer than seven metres are prohibited from using the Swartberg Pass between Oudtshoorn and Prince Albert.
The narrow, winding mountain road is unsuitable for heavy vehicles, including semi-trailers and interlinks.
Previous incidents involving trucks have led to temporary closures during recovery operations, delaying residents, deliveries and other road users travelling in permitted vehicles.
The warning comes as the closure of Meiringspoort has increased reliance on alternative routes through the region. However, the Swartberg Pass cannot be used as a detour for prohibited vehicles.
On 12 October, a truck entered the pass from the Oudtshoorn side despite the restrictions. According to Prince Albert Municipality, traffic officials stopped the vehicle after road users reported it.
The driver received fines totalling R9 000 for several offences, including entering the restricted route, an expired driving licence and endangering other traffic. The driver was instructed to turn around.
Die Hoorn previously reported on a truck incident that polluted a watercourse, leaving nearby residents without their usual supply of safe drinking water and disrupting farming activities.
The municipality has thanked residents and road users for their vigilance and for reporting trucks using the pass.
Road users can report incidents involving prohibited vehicles on the Swartberg Pass via WhatsApp on 064 037 5062.
Meanwhile, the Swartberg Pass Action Group has called for stronger measures to prevent prohibited vehicles from entering the route. Its proposals include physical access controls, vehicle screening and clearer warnings.
The Western Cape Department of Infrastructure has confirmed that the existing signage complies with the South African Road Traffic Signs Manual. No further engineering modifications are planned at this stage.
The Road Freight Association has urged transport operators to consider the following alternative routes, depending on their destination:
• Via Laingsburg: Follow the N1 to Laingsburg, then take the R323 through the Seweweeks-poort area to the R62 and continue towards Oudtshoorn.
• Via Willowmore: Use the N9 via Willowmore towards Uniondale, continuing towards George and the eastern Garden Route via the appropriate connecting routes.
Operators should check current road conditions and confirm that their chosen route is suitable before departure.
Drivers must obey all restriction signs and avoid relying solely on GPS navigation. A suggested route does not override the restrictions displayed on road signs.
