After more than four decades of dedicated service to the South African Police Service (SAPS), Lieutenant Colonel Malcolm Pojie, a familiar and highly respected figure in Southern Cape media circles, officially concluded his remarkable policing career on Friday, 30 October.
Pojie, who became a trusted link between the police, media and public over the years, joined the SAPS on 14 May 1986 in Stellenbosch. Later that same year, he was transferred to George, marking the beginning of his long association with the Southern Cape.
His career in communications began in 1998, and in 2006 he took up a position at provincial level when he joined the Western Cape Media Centre.
Known for his calm demeanour, professionalism and ability to communicate clearly, even under challenging circumstances, Pojie earned the respect of colleagues, journalists and members of the public alike.
On 1 November 2022, he was promoted to the rank of Lieutenant Colonel and appointed head of the Western Cape Media Centre. He was later transferred to the Garden Route District, where he spent the final chapter of his distinguished career.
During a farewell ceremony held at the George District Operational Room on Friday, Garden Route District Commissioner, Major General Phumzile Cetyana, thanked Pojie for his invaluable contribution to the police service.
Reflecting on his career, Pojie said it had been a privilege to serve both the organisation and his country.
“It was only by the grace of God that I was able to endure,” he said.
He also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to his colleagues and commanders for their friendship, mentorship, guidance and support throughout the years.
The Western Cape SAPS management extended its appreciation to Pojie for his exceptional service and unwavering dedication, wishing him well as he embarks on a well-deserved retirement.
For many journalists across the Southern Cape, Pojie will be remembered as an approachable, professional and dependable police spokesperson who played an important role in maintaining communication between the police and the media for many years.
